Logan

It hadn’t taken long to put away the small bag of clothes that I brought from the hospital with me. With nothing left to do I decided to go and sit on the front porch in the sun. I hadn’t been out there long when I saw York pull away in his truck. I felt awkward, like I was invading his space. I didn’t feel like I belonged. The truth was I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere.

I closed my eyes and allowed the natural rocking of the chair I sat in to lull me into a sense of peace. “Hey there,” a deep voice called startling me. I snapped my eye open and looked at the step of the porch where an older guy with grey hair stood. He held a cup of coffee in dirty hands. “I was just about to come and take a break. Mind if I join you?”

I glanced around and opened my mouth to speak. “Um yeah sure,” I croaked.

“Great. My name is Jack. I’m a ranch hand here,” he said lifting his hands. “I won’t offer to shake your hand. Been working on the tractor all day, grease gets everywhere.”

I smiled and nodded my head. “My name is Logan.”

“Well, it’s great to meet you Logan. York’s Mama would be mighty pleased to have someone else in the house. I imagine it gets pretty lonely here for York on his own,” Jack said.

I smiled and nodded again, unsure on what to say. Not that Jack seemed to need me to say anything. He appeared to be the type of guy that could carry on a conversation all by himself.

“Damned shame that his Mama and Daddy are gone now. They were good people. But York, he is a good soul. Sensitive. Got a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back if you asked for it. Just be patient with him if he stumbles a bit,” Jack continued.

I frowned, not understanding what Jack meant. I didn’t know what York would do to stumble around me. If anything, it was going to be me that was awkward.

“Are you expectin’ doctor’s visits and so forth out here?” Jack asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I, um, I don’t know. Maurice said he was taking care of all my appointments. I just trusted him.”

“I’m sure it will all work out for ya. Damned cowardly what that fella did to you. Hope he rots in jail,” Jack said gulping down the last of his coffee before he stood with a groan. “Well, I best get back to work. Horses will be wanting feeding soon. If you need anything, I’ll be in the red barn over the way. Just come on in. York shouldn’t take too long to get back.”

I gave Jack what I hoped was a smile and nodded my head. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome kid,” he said with a broad grin and turned hobbling down the porch and disappearing around the side of the house.

I closed my eye
